Frank Caruso «It's My Life» (2018)

L’abilità tecnica e il talento del guitar hero milanese, Frank Caruso, stella del panorama hard rock & heavy metal italiano, sono indiscussi. Nutrito è il background artistico del chitarrista milanese che - dopo aver iniziato la sua attività musicale come session man per diverse produzioni italiane, lavorando anche con Franco Battiato - ha intrapreso la strada della collaborazione televisiva creando, per Mediaset in particolare, spot pubblicitari e importanti sigle. Dopo il successo della band Arachnes, nata dalle ceneri del suo primo gruppo, Firehouse, e caratterizzata da un sound power-prog-symponic, Frank Caruso pubblica nel 2006 il suo primo album solista “Kaleidoscope”, che viene distribuito anche in Usa. Il decisivo incontro con Mark Boals, storica voce di Malmsteen, nonché già cantante dei Dokken e di Ted Nugent, porterà il nostro guitar hero ad impreziosire i suoi Thunder Rising, determinando il grande successo del progetto hard rock-blues. Altrettanto importanti saranno, nella carriera di Frank Caruso, le collaborazione con il tastierista Mistheria nell’articolato Vivaldi Metal Project e quella con Rob Rock, con il quale il chitarrista milanese inciderà il secondo album Kaleidoscope II, quasi tutto strumentale. Ma arriviamo alla più recente tappa solista di Frank Caruso: il mini EP “It’s my life”, pubblicato nell’ottobre 2018 e prodotto dal gruppo Mediaset RTI. Anche in questo Ep uscito esclusivamente in formato digitale, Frank chiama a raccolta il suo talentuoso amico Mark Boals, che conferisce al lavoro un’impronta vocale tipica del rock melodico american style. E anche le costruzioni delle ballate presenti nel disco mostrano tale caratteristica. L’Ep si apre con il brano “It’s my life”, che conferisce il nome all’intero album: una song neoclassic metal a tratti, caratterizzata da melodie molto semplici, con un assolo bello ma troppo breve. Non si avverte una particolare ispirazione o un forte messaggio comunicativo. Così come nella ballata in acustico “I don’t want to come back”, che risulta senza dubbio ben costruita strutturalmente ma fin troppo scontata, assimilabile alla sigla di un telefilm.
Poi è la volta della power ballad “Born to new life”, contrassegnata da melodie pop anni ’80 stile Brian Adams. Le strutture vocali di Mark Boals sono impeccabili tecnicamente, ma nell’insieme, anche qui, c’è poca espressività, eccetto per l’assolo di Caruso, sempre smagliante ma troppo breve. Chiude il mini Ep “Summer never end”, song strumentale che però sembra totalmente sintetica, tanto da apparire un sample del programma Garage band. Insomma, senza nulla togliere alla bravura tecnica e all’esperienza di Caruso e Boals, questo Ep rimane assolutamente inespressivo.
